Belajar Bersama Native Speaker: SMP Al Hikmah Surabaya Awali Semester Genap dengan "English Corner"
SURABAYA – Mengawali Semester Genap Tahun Pelajaran 2025/2026, SMP Al Hikmah Surabaya memberikan pengalaman spesial bagi para siswanya. Pada Senin (5/1/2026), suasana sekolah tampak berbeda dengan hadirnya Mr. Derek, seorang native speaker, dalam kegiatan bertajuk "English Corner: How to Speak English Confidently". Kegiatan berlangsung di Gedung Hikmah Teater (GHT) diikuti oleh seluruh siswa kelas 7, 8, dan 9. Program ini dirancang untuk memberikan pengalaman langsung berkomunikasi dengan penutur asli menggunakan bahasa inggris.
Dalam sesinya, Mr. Derek tidak hanya memberikan teori, tetapi juga mengajak para siswa berinteraksi langsung melalui berbagai simulasi percakapan yang menyenangkan. Ia menekankan bahwa kunci utama dalam berbahasa adalah keberanian untuk mencoba tanpa takut melakukan kesalahan tata bahasa (grammar). Interaksi yang cair membuat para siswa yang awalnya malu-malu menjadi lebih berani untuk mengutarakan pendapat mereka dalam bahasa Inggris. Hal ini sejalan dengan visi SMP Al Hikmah untuk membekali lulusannya dengan kompetensi global yang mumpuni.
Mr. Derek menyatakan sedikit kesan dan pesannya yang disampaikan oleh beliau
"My impressions of the lesson today is largely reflective of the fact that our children today face entirely different challenges than we did growing up. They have been alive during the new digital era with unprecedented connectivity and learning options that just did not exist when we were in their shoes. What that means for our students is that they have a much higher proficiency for language use and learning than would otherwise be expected, but that is mostly in receptive form. To be clear, they’ve had all the advantages parents can provide and for those who are already confident it shows. We as educators and parents still need to be mindful of finding opportunities for them to produce the language as much as possible in a ‘judgement free’ environment to foster their confidence.”
“As for the biggest tip to improve personal confidence in English — one must above all try. That is the not-so-secret secret. To improve you must be willing to try. That is also a much harder fear to overcome than many people realize, but the solution really is pretty easy — be gentle with your friends and celebrate efforts together. Before you know it, you’ll be confidently trying (and succeeding) to communicate in no time!” tambah Mr. Derek
Harapannya, semangat "Speak Confidently" yang dibawa oleh Mr. Derek dapat terus tertanam dalam rutinitas harian siswa selama satu semester ke depan.
